Sweet News for Sweet Lovers
Chocolate seems to be one of the strands of our DNA, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Growing up, you were probably told that it gave you acne and made you, let’s say, heavy. We now know that’s not exactly true. There are benefits from the delicious treat that few people know about. (Caution: After you read this article, don’t rush out and wolf down five pounds of the sweet stuff. Too much of a good thing is still a bad thing.)
According to Men’s Fitness (February 2004), chocolate may be improving - and even prolonging - our lives. For instance, did you know that chocolate was once considered a male sexual enhancing substance? It is said that Montezuma would drink a cup before entering his harem and Casanova considered chocolate the “elixir of love” and drank it instead of champagne. It’s cheaper than Viagra and you don’t need a prescription. That ought to be enough to send guys out to their local sweet shops.
On the more serious and healthy side, one chocolate bar has more cancer fighting antioxidants than a five-ounce glass of red wine. Harvard researchers have found that men who eat chocolate a few times a month live significantly longer than men who don’t eat chocolate. It has even been found to strengthen the immune system and contains a natural fiber called lignin, which helps keep bad cholesterol (LDL) under control. All of this, however, is when consumed in moderation.
Finally, we have scientific basis for enjoying one of our favorite treats. Researchers such as the ones above are giving us good news about a healthy American addiction - all this and it’s also been found to be more effective than cheese on mousetraps. Does it get any better?
